NEW Spelling Information
Grade 1’s and 2's now have individual spelling lists. These (5) or (6) words are taken directly from their individual writing. These words are either a) sight words that students should know at this point in the school year b)words that students have difficulty with during independent writing time or c) are words of personal interest.
Spelling tests to monitor student progress, will be given (by our Grade 3/4 buddies) every other Friday, unless it will be a hoilday and we have our test on Thursday.
Students will no longer continue to bring their 'spelling booklet' back and forth to school. You will find the list of words written in the agenda at the beginning of a 2-week period.
Parents are encouraged to engage students in ‘word-play’ throughout the week (see below for ideas).
- Create a word search
- Draw word boxes for each word
- Rainbow words - write each word using a different colour for each letter
- Scrabble words - using scrabble tiles, add up the value of each spelling word
- Make sentences - use each of the spelling words in a sentence
- Read it - search for spelling words in various print (e.g., newspaper, books, posters, flyers, etc.)
- Use index cards to print each letter...move letters around to make words
- Play hangman with the list words
- Use the words to write a story, letter to a friend, etc.
