Social Studies: Our Social Studies unit is Ancient Civilisations. We have visited the ROM on Monday, April 22. We have discussed archelogy and how archeologists can learn about ancient civilisations by studying artefacts. We have also discussed land features and the physical environment, and how these have influenced the development of civilisations. We will be researching Mesopotamia as a class. Students will then research an ancient civilisation of their choice. See the letter to parents on Edmodo and under "rubriques et guides d'études".
Writing: We are working on one last piece of procedural writing. This is an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge of the "impératif" to their own writing and demonstrate how they use the writing process. We are also starting to practice "passé composé". This is the most complex verb tense we will study this year, and students will apply this verb tense to write a recount later this month.
Reading: We are practicing making inferences. Students are using clues from images and written text together with their schema to make infrences orally and in writing. These skills will be used in an up-coming book report.
Students should be reading in French at home for 60 minutes every week.
Students are encouraged to speak French at all times during French instruction time. This is essential in order to maintain an immersion environment for all students. In grade 5, students should be able to express their needs in French and discuss concepts with guidance using familiar and new vocabulary.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Edmodo
Dear Parents,
As many of you have already heard, we have successfully launched our online classroom through Edmodo. All the students in 5-2 and 5-3 have created their own secure account and have begun to check for information, homework, and updates; post questions and comments to the different classroom boards; and submit assignments or confirmed when in class assignments have been completed. We are very excited about how positive the student’s reactions have been to the use of this new technology and are proud of the supportive, rich dialogues that have begun to take shape online.
Edmodo is an interactive and safe online forum where teachers, students, and parents can connect and share their learning, expectations, ideas, and resources. This platform is available online through www.edmodo.com, and for several idevices and android devices (free apps.). We chose to pilot the use of this online classroom because it offers a very safe and easy to navigate interface. It gives all students an opportunity to further develop independent learning skills with support of both teachers and parents. This
online classroom is meant to be an additional support, and is not meant to replace the student’s agenda or the paper copies of all necessary resources.
About your child’s account:
- Each group that the students belong to is locked and completely secure.
- Each student account is monitored by either Mme Rivet or Mrs. Miceli. All the posts written are also moderated and must be confirmed by either teacher before they are visible online.
- Students can create and reply to posts. They can do so in any subject groups in English and French, as well as write “social posts” in Homeroom.
- Students can answer and ask questions to groups or privately to a specific teacher.
- Students are encouraged to share current events and personal experiences related to topics studied in class.
- Electronic copies of homework and home assignments, additional resources, web links, etc. are available in the group folders.
- Review and extension questions may be posted to a subject group to further encourage discussion.
- Electronic copies of assignments (i.e., reading letters) can be attached as a document file when “turned in” online. This way feedback could also be received on Edmodo.
- Grades for some assignments and quizzes may be posted on Edmodo in the progress section of the student’s profile, which can only be viewed by the student, the student’s parents and his/her teachers.
- Badges may be earned to recognise students for a variety of reasons as they interact on Edmodo.
About your parent account:
- Parents are encouraged to set-up an account that is linked to their child’s account. During set-up parents will need to use the individualized “parent code” located on the right hand side of their child’s homepage.
- The Parent homepage is streamlined and allows parents access to viewtheir child’s Edmodo activity: posts & replies that their child is involved in; their child’s profile and progress (i.e., grades, assignments due/late); and their child’s calendar.
- Information will also be posted directly to parents and accessed on the parent’s homepage (i.e., fieldtrip forms, current events, important updates, etc.).
- Upcoming events, homework and assignments are visible to parents in the planner (calendar icon). Details can be seen by selecting the different entries in the planner.
Moving forward with this new and exciting online leaning platform we need support and constructive feedback. We are asking parents as they set-up and use Edmodo to share their experiences, things they like, and suggestions for areas they feel could be improved upon. If you think that a live information session would help support your family, please email and let either Mme Rivet or Mrs. Miceli know before Friday, April 19th.
Sincerely,
Mme. Rivet & Mrs. Miceli
