Ancient Civilisation Research Project
Part 1 - research
- Students can chose any civilization they are interested in, but students are aware that the classroom has more resources for the following civilizations: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient China, Indus Valley (India), Maya.
- Students who choose different civilizations will be asked to bring the books and websites they plan to use for their research, so they do not fall behind because of lack of resources.
- Students must use at least 2 resources in French and provide references for all resources.
- Research must be done at school but additional research can be done at home. Students may not choose to do all their research at home since selecting resources and locating information are assessed as part of the research process.
- Research notes should be in the form of dot jots in the student's own words. Information may also be represented with flowcharts, mind-maps, tables, diagrams, etc. Research notes should not be copies passages from a resource.
- Students should get information about 5 topics: the natural environment, family life, social structure (including government) , religious beliefs and arts and sciences. Students have received additional information on each topics and guiding questions to assist with their research.
Part 2 – Diorama (by May 22)
- Students will use information gathered during their research to build a diorama representing a scene from their civilization. The diorama should incorporate elements from as many of the 5 topics as possible.
- Students may build pieces for their diorama at home, however we recommend the main scene remains at school to minimize the chances of damage in transport. It also allows the teacher to make suggestions during the building process and have discussions with students to better understand their thought process.
- Some material will be available at school. Students may supplement with materials from home.
Part 3 – Photos and Impress/Powerpoint presentation (by May 29)
- Students will take pictures of parts of their diorama, representing each topic.
- The pictures will be used to make and Impress presentation that will accompany the student’s oral presentation.
- The presentation will therefore include 5 to 10 slides, each with a picture and a caption.
Part 4 – Oral Presentation (begin June 3)
- Students are evaluated on the technical aspects (eye contact, voice level, expression, etc.) as well as oral expression (pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structure) and how these combine to produce clear and effective communication.
- Presentations will not be timed, but as a general reference should be 3 to 5 min.
